Beachgoers in the South-West will be able to take advantage of a new shark enclosure this Australia Day weekend with the completion of an underwater barrier in Dunsborough.

A satellite-linked shark monitor has been installed near the Busselton Jetty today and activated ready to detect any tagged sharks that may pass by the area.

A Western Australian company and two WA universities have been awarded $967,161 in the second round of applied research funding as part of the State Government’s Shark Hazard Mitigation Strategy.

The State Government will begin deploying baited drum lines at eight popular Western Australian beach locations in the new year to protect beachgoers from dangerous sharks deemed to be a threat to humans.

Two more satellite-linked tagged shark monitors for the WA Government’s Shark Monitoring Network have now been installed in Albany’s King George Sound and are online ready to make detections.

Police will be supported by the Department of Fisheries and other local agencies today and for the rest of the week, to provide increased precautionary safety measures around South West beaches. 

Beach safety along Western Australia’s popular South-West coast will be boosted this weekend when the Surf Life Saving WA (SLSWA) helicopter takes to the sky for the first of its daily patrol flights over this summer.

After a series of tagged white shark detections were recorded along the Perth coast early this morning and late yesterday afternoon, the Department of Fisheries is advising water users between Floreat and Mindarie to exercise additional caution. 

Western Australia’s Shark Monitoring Network is now using new technology to provide alerts on 326 tagged sharks - including a four metre white shark recently tagged by Department of Fisheries research scientists.
