Services have been restored to the land-based Shark Warning System (tower) at North Cottesloe.

Alert level:

A shark WARNING has been issued for the lower reaches of the Swan River after an increased number of tagged shark detections.

Update on 13 February at 9:35 am

Officers from the Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development (DPIRD) have completed their investigation of a reported shark interaction at Rossmoyne Foreshore in the Canning River on 12 February 2026.

Based on the information available, DPIRD officers have determined that the interaction involved a ~1m fish or shark in very shallow (50cm) waters, and no further action is required.

Alert level:

A shark WARNING has been issued for Deep Water Point in the Canning River in the City of Melville after a delayed report of a shark interaction.

Update on 30 January at 7:40 am

Parks and Wildlife Service officers from the Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions (DBCA) have advised that the whale carcass located at Sandy Bight Beach is no longer in place.

Additional caution is recommended by the Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development, as residue from where the whale carcass was beached may still attract sharks to the area.

Update on 29 January at 9:40 am

The technical fault impacting the automatic posting of reported shark sightings to SharkSmart and Surf Life Saving WA’s Twitter feed has been resolved. The Shark Notification System is fully operational again.

Update on 25 January at 9:15 am

Fisheries officers from the Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development (DPIRD) have inspected the area where the whale carcass was located at Buller River Beach and have advised that it is no longer in place.

Additional caution is recommended by DPIRD as residue from where the whale carcass was beached may still attract sharks to the area.

Parks and Wildlife Service officers from the Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions (DBCA) have advised that the whale carcasses located at Yeagarup Beach, west of Windy Harbour are no longer in place.

Additional caution is recommended by the Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development, as residue from where the whale carcasses were beached may still attract sharks to the area.

Update on 21 January at 18:15 pm

Officers from the City of Albany have now removed the dolphin carcass from Goode Beach in the City of Albany.

Additional caution is recommended by the Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development, as any residue from where the whale carcass was beached may still attract sharks to the area.

Update on 21 January at 10:45 am 

Officers from the City of Albany have inspected the area where the whale carcass was located at Lowlands Beach and have advised that it is no longer in place.

Shark warning signs have been removed by the City of Albany.

Additional caution is recommended by the Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development, as residue from where the whale carcass was beached may still attract sharks to the area.
