Shark WARNING for Deep Water Point in the Canning River
30 January 2026Alert level:
A shark WARNING has been issued for Deep Water Point in the Canning River in the City of Melville after a delayed report of a shark interaction.
Situation:
- The shark interaction was reported by a member of the public at approximately 9:00 am on Friday 30 January 2026.
- A swimmer was bumped by a reported 3.5m bull shark at approximately 5:00 pm on Thursday 29 January 2026.
What to do:
- Take additional caution in the Deep Water Point area.
- Adhere to beach closures advised by Local Government Rangers, Parks and Wildlife Service officers or Surf Life Saving WA (SLSWA).
- Use your Sea Sense and stay informed by checking for shark activity on the SharkSmart website, SharkSmart WA app or follow @SLSWA on X (formerly Twitter).
- If you see a shark, report it to Water Police on 9442 8600. All shark sighting information reported to Water Police is provided to land managers and relevant authorities and to the public on the SharkSmart website, SharkSmart WA app and @SLSWA on X.
What authorities are doing:
Officers from Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development (DPIRD) will continue to monitor the situation.
