Shark Monitoring Network System outage this Thursday evening

Scheduled system maintenance affecting the Shark Monitoring Network was successfully completed on the evening of Thursday 13 June 2019.

The Shark Monitoring Network is now fully operational. There were no tagged shark detections during the maintenance period.

Bring your Sea Sense to the beach. Stay informed of the latest detections and sighting information by checking the Shark Activity Map on the SharkSmart website – www.sharksmart.com.au/shark-activity or the Surf Life Saving WA Twitter – twitter.com/SLSWA.

The Shark Notification System forms part of a range of shark hazard mitigation strategies in place.  See www.sharksmart.com.au for additional information.

If you see a shark, report it to Water Police on 9442 8600.

 

Alert issued on 11 June

Alert level:
A shark ADVICE has been issued for Western Australian water users due to a scheduled temporary outage of the shark notification system, affecting the notification of tagged shark detections, on the evening of Thursday 13 June 2019.

Situation:

  • Due to schedule maintenance, all tagged shark detections from the Shark Monitoring Network will not be uploaded to the Sharksmart website and social media between 8pm and midnight on Thursday 13 June 2019.
  • The outage affects ALL shark monitoring receivers State-wide.
  • The sighting reports element of the WA shark notification system will be fully operational, so water users can still call any sightings into Water Police and they will be posted as usual. 

What to do:

  • Adhere to any beach closures advised by Local Government Rangers or Surf Life Saving WA.
  • Keep informed of the latest detection and sighting information by checking the SharkSmart website or Surf Life Saving WA’s Twitter feed.
  • If you see a shark, report it to Water Police on 9442 8600. All shark sighting information reported to Water Police is provided to response agencies and to the public on the Surf Life Saving WA Twitter feed.

What authorities are doing: 
The Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development will be working to restore the system to full operational status by Friday morning, 14 June 2019.
