Shark INCIDENT for Kurrajong Campground, Cape Range National Park near Exmouth

Beaches between Pilgramunna and Bloodwood Creek in the Cape Range National Park near Exmouth have been reopened by Parks and Wildlife Service officers from the Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions, following a shark incident on Saturday 29 April 2023. 

Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development recommend additional caution in the Cape Range National Park area.

Parks and Wildlife Service officers from the Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions have closed the beaches between Pilgramunna and Bloodwood Creek in the Cape Range National Park near Exmouth.

Alert issued on 29 April

Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development (DPIRD) are currently coordinating responses for a shark incident that occurred in waters off the Kurrajong Campground, Cape Range National Park in the Shire of Exmouth.

Situation:

  • DPIRD received a report of a possible shark bite incident at approximately 3:00pm on Saturday 29 April 2023. 
  • A snorkeller received injuries after being bitten by a reported unknown species of shark. 

What to do:

  • Take additional caution in the Cape Range National Park area.
  • Adhere to beach closures advised by Local Government Rangers, Parks and Wildlife Service officers or Surf Life Saving WA.
  • Use your Sea Sense and stay informed by checking for shark activity on the SharkSmart website, SharkSmart WA app or Surf Life Saving WA’s Twitter feed.
  • If you see a shark, report it to Water Police on 9442 8600. All shark sighting information reported to Water Police is provided to land managers and relevant authorities and to the public on the SharkSmart website, SharkSmart WA app and Surf Life Saving WA Twitter feed.

DPIRD is working with local authorities to coordinate responses.
