Shark INCIDENT at Horse Shoe Reefs north of Marjorie Bay, Rottnest Island

The Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development (DPIRD) is currently involved in assisting WA Police with a serious shark bite incident at Horse Shoe Reefs north of Marjorie Bay, Rottnest Island.  Previously reported as Geordie Bay.

Situation:

  • A man was bitten by a reported 4.0m white shark at approximately 9:54 am on 16 May 2026.
  • The incident was reported to DPIRD at 10:03 am.

What to do:

  • Take additional caution in the Horse Shoe Reefs and Marjorie Bay areas.
  • Adhere to beach closures advised by Local Government Rangers, Parks and Wildlife Service officers or Surf Life Saving WA (SLSWA).
  • Use your Sea Sense and stay informed by checking for shark activity on the SharkSmart website, SharkSmart WA app or follow @SLSWA on X (formerly Twitter).
  • If you see a shark, report it to Water Police on 9442 8600. All shark sighting information reported to Water Police is provided to land managers and relevant authorities and to the public on the SharkSmart website, SharkSmart WA app and @SLSWA on X. 

What authorities are doing: 

DPIRD is working with WA Police to coordinate responses.

A DPIRD patrol vessel will be on the water monitoring the area.
