Beaches remain closed at Cheynes Beach today29 December 2014
Beaches will remain closed at Cheynes Beach, about 60 kilometres east of Albany, today after a fatal shark incident yesterday which claimed the life of a young man.
The Department of Fisheries is currently investigating and will again deploy equipment today in an effort to catch the shark (most likely to be a white shark).
The department has urged local people and holiday makers to stay out of the water.
At about midday yesterday, a young man suffered fatal injuries after being bitten by a shark. It is believed that he was spear fishing with another man off Cheynes Beach, near Bald Island.
The department is working closely with Police, Department of Parks and Wildlife and the City of Albany.
Cheynes Beach is now closed and advice is that water users should:
- Adhere to any beach closures which may be in place.
- Keep informed of the latest detection and sighting information by checking the Surf Life Saving Twitter – www.twitter.com/SLSWA or the SharkSmart activity map - www.sharksmart.com.au/shark-activity.
- Report any shark sightings to Water Police on 9442 8600.
