Shark ADVICE for Hamelin Bay in the Shire of Augusta Margaret River

Update on 20 April at 12:15 pm

Parks and Wildlife Service officers from the Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions have successfully removed the whale carcass from Hamelin Bay. 

Currently the beach remains closed. Parks and Wildlife Service officers will reassess the closure on 21 April 2024. 

Additional caution is recommended by the Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development, as any residue from where the whale carcass was, may still attract sharks to the area.

Shark ADVICE for False Island near Albany

Current Alerts and Warnings

Update on 7 February at 12:40pm  

Officers from the Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development (DPIRD) have inspected the whale carcass which remains in place at False Island, east of Albany. Carcass remnants, including blubber remain in place on the rocks.

Additional caution is recommended by DPIRD, as the slowly decomposing whale carcass may attract sharks to the area.

The technical fault impacting shark activity information from being automatically published on Surf Life Saving WA’s (SLSWA) Twitter feed has been restored.

Tagged shark detections and reported shark sightings are now being automatically published on @SLSWA.

Coastal safety for Easter and the school holidays

Recent reports of western Australian salmon schools off Albany and the South West Coast are early reminders of the annual and much-awaited salmon run.

It’s good news for fishers that the salmon are turning up in time for Easter, with Good Friday and the school holidays kicking off on 29 March.

Parks and Wildlife Service officers from the Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions have successfully removed the whale carcass from Hunters Access near BEN Sign EX2082, North West Cape.

Additional caution is recommended by the Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development, as any residue from where the whale carcass was beached may still attract sharks to the area.
